Perhaps 2018 was the most interesting year for Golden Globe fashion. Hollywood showed solidarity in all black for the #metoo and #timesup movements. This is inspirational in so many ways. While 2018 will definitely be the year women take over Hollywood, it will also be the year of black on the red carpet. Here are some of the trends from the event as well as similar outfits that will inspire you to both dress up and stand up.
Pants & Skirted Pants/Jumpsuits
Alison Brie literally said it best, “Tonight is about women wearing the pants so I chose to literally wear the pants.” Debra Messing, Christina Hendricks, and Alexis Bledel also wore pants or pants that resembled dresses aka skirted pants. This might be one of my favorite styles ever. I'm hoping this look is here to stay.
Velvet
Natalie Portman and Viola Davis took classic old Hollywood to a new level. A signature winter fabric, velvet is forgiving on so many body types and really helps make your accessories pop.
Bows
Bow yes! Tracee Ellis Ross, Sara Paulson, Dove Cameron and Emilia Clarke all had very unique bow dresses. What an easy look to steal!
Something Extra
Whether it's sequins, shine or something sheer, the stars were all about the extra this year. Kerry Washington, Octavia Spencer, Lilly James, Nicole Kidman, Ashley Judd and Issa Rae are great examples of this.
Peter Pan Collar
Elisabeth Moss looked so prim and proper with her Peter Pan collar dress. These style collars are magical and can take any outfit someplace else, making a formal look more casual or a casual look more formal.
Pop of Color
While everyone wore black, not everyone wore all black. Mandy Moore, Allison Williams, Saoirse Ronan and Katherine Langford all had a pop of color in their dresses. While Halston Heritage killed it this season with their pop of color dresses, it's easy to add a pop of color to any dress you already own using a belt or sash.
